Un servicio religioso en la catedral londinense de Saint Paul fue el punto de arranque este viernes de un largo fin de semana de celebraciones por el 90º cumpleños de la reina Isabel II.
Nacida el 21 de abril de 1926, la reina de Inglaterra heredó la costumbre celebrar su cumpleaños dos veces: en privado, el día exacto, y oficialmente en verano (boreal), para asegurarse de que el tiempo será mejor.
Pero tratándose de un aniversario tan señalado, los festejos de abril ya fueron mayores de lo habitual, en particular por el baño de masas que se dio la reina en las inmediaciones del castillo de Windsor.
Isabel II asistió al oficio religioso de Saint Paul con un vestido amarillo y acompañada de su esposo, Felipe de Edimburgo, que este viernes cumple 95 años, de su hijo Carlos, heredero a la Corona, y de sus nietos Guillermo y Enrique.
El sábado, la monarca presidirá el gran desfile militar conocido como “Trooping the colour” (“desfile de estandartes”), que tiene su origen en los antiguos preparativos para la guerra, cuando se exhibían todos las banderas del ejército para que los soldados las reconocieran en el fragor de la batalla.
El domingo, finalmente, se celebrará un gran pícnic para 10.000 personas en el Mall, la larga avenida que nace en el palacio de Buckingham, en el que la reina participará con su familia.
Por último, los pubs, los tradicionales bares británicos, podrán cerrar más tarde las noches del 10 y el 11 de junio (habitualmente cierran a las 23H00), un gran servicio a los cientos de miles de aficionados que querrán ver en compañía -y si es posible festejar- el debut de la selección de fútbol de Inglaterra en la Eurocopa, el sábado ante Rusia.
